Patrick Vieira’s Senegal debut moved from Dakar to Maputo

Patrick Vieira will not begin his tenure as Senegal manager in front of a home crowd after the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) confirmed that the Lions of Teranga’s opening CAN 2027 qualifier against Mozambique has been moved to Maputo.

The fixture was due to be played in Dakar on Friday, 25 September 2026. It will now take place in Mozambique on the same date, following a request from the FSF that was approved by both the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and the Mozambican Football Federation.

The decision means Vieira’s first competitive match in charge will be played away from Senegal, depriving him of the expected opportunity to launch his reign before supporters in Dakar.

The FSF said neither of the capital’s two main stadiums could adequately host the match.

The Abdoulaye Wade Stadium in Diamniadio is unavailable because it will stage the opening ceremony of the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games.

The alternative was the Leopold Sedar Senghor Stadium, the former home of the national team before the construction of the Diamniadio venue. However, the FSF said its pitch was not ready for a match of this level.

The federation said the pitch “is not, at this stage, in an optimal condition to host an official match of this scale”.

Senegal’s National Technical Directorate requested that the game be relocated. The FSF said it had acted “out of concern for the players’ health and the quality of the competition” and wanted to “take no risks”.

The change of venue is not, in itself, a major sporting setback. Senegal were already scheduled to face the Mambas away from home during the qualifying campaign. But it adds to an unsettled start to Vieira’s time in charge.

Vieira was appointed to replace Pape Thiaw after the former manager’s departure became increasingly complicated by uncertainty over his contract. Questions over how Vieira’s deal would be financed, as well as the wait for final approval from the Senegalese state, also delayed the transition.

The former France international has yet to publicly address supporters in Senegal or formally speak about his new role.

Vieira’s appointment was already an unconventional one before the venue switch. He was expected to make his first appearance in Dakar, but will now meet his players for the opening qualifier in Maputo.

Senegal will then face Ethiopia away on 29 September in their second CAN 2027 qualifier before travelling to Marseille for a friendly against Comoros.

The unusual schedule comes as Senegal considers its prospects of hosting the Africa Cup of Nations in three years, while the condition and availability of its two principal stadiums remain a concern.
