Patrick Vieira leads wave of new coaches into Africa Cup of Nations qualifying

Former Arsenal captain Patrick Vieira headlines a new generation of coaches taking charge of African national teams as the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers usher in a fresh era on the continent’s touchlines.

The opening round of qualifying has not only marked the start of the race for a place at the tournament in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, but has also showcased a significant changing of the guard, with several high-profile appointments making their competitive debuts.

Vieira’s arrival at the helm of Senegal has attracted widespread attention, while other notable figures including Benni McCarthy, Aliou Cisse and Carlos Queiroz are also beginning new chapters with their respective nations.

Vieira begins Senegal chapter

The former Manchester United first-team coach has wasted little time stamping his authority, publicly backing goalkeeper Byrne Omondi despite criticism following Kenya’s 1-1 draw with Eritrea in their Group campaign opener.

McCarthy insisted Omondi would remain Harambee Stars’ first-choice goalkeeper, underlining his commitment to stability as Kenya seeks qualification for the tournament it will co-host.

Familiar faces in new surroundings

Elsewhere, Aliou Cisse is now leading Angola after ending his long association with Senegal.

The experienced coach’s first qualifying campaign with the Palancas Negras has begun with renewed optimism as Angola aim to build on recent improvements in their continental performances.

Veteran Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz has also returned to African football, taking charge of Ghana as the Black Stars attempt to secure a return to the Africa Cup of Nations after missing the 2025 edition.

Queiroz, who previously managed South Africa and Egypt, brings decades of international experience to a Ghana side looking to rebuild after recent disappointments.
