Patrick Vieira agrees deal to become new Senegal head coach

The Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) has reportedly reached an agreement with former France international Patrick Vieira to become the next head coach of the Teranga Lions, AfricaSoccer.com has been told.

Vieira, a former Arsenal skipper has already begun discussions with federation officials after arriving in Senegal on July 29.

The former Arsenal captain is said to have presented his coaching project and outlined his vision for the future of the national team as he prepares for a potential return to management.

However, an official confirmation of Vieira’s appointment is being delayed due to an unresolved contractual situation involving current head coach Pape Thiaw.

The FSF is reportedly working to finalise matters surrounding Thiaw’s compensation package before making any announcement on Vieira’s arrival.

The federation wants to avoid complications as it prepares for a transition in the technical leadership of the national team.

If an agreement with Thiaw is not reached before September, reports indicate that Senegal’s National Technical Director could take charge of the team on an interim basis while the federation completes the process.

Vieira, who previously managed clubs including Crystal Palace FC and OGC Nice, has been without a coaching role since leaving Strasbourg in 2023.

The 1998 FIFA World Cup winner brings extensive experience from both his playing career and time on the touchline.

Senegal are expected to make an official decision soon as they prepare for upcoming international commitments, with the federation keen to appoint a coach capable of maintaining the country’s status as one of Africa’s leading football nations.
