Patrick Vieira agrees deal to become new Senegal head coach

The Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) has reportedly reached an agreement with former France international Patrick Vieira to become the next head coach of the Teranga Lions, AfricaSoccer.com has been told.

Vieira, a legendary former Arsenal captain, arrived in Senegal on July 29 and has already held talks with federation officials regarding the national team’s future direction.

The 1998 FIFA World Cup winner is said to have presented his coaching project and shared his vision for Senegal’s senior national team as he prepares for a possible return to management.

However, an official announcement of Vieira’s appointment has been delayed due to an unresolved contractual issue involving current head coach Pape Thiaw.

The FSF is reportedly working to settle Thiaw’s compensation package before confirming the change in technical leadership.

The federation has yet to issue any formal termination notice to Thiaw, meaning the coach remains legally contracted and continues to hold the position of Senegal head coach for the time being.

The delay is aimed at avoiding any legal complications as Senegal prepares for a transition on the sidelines.

Reports suggest that if an agreement with Thiaw is not reached before September, Senegal’s National Technical Director could take temporary charge of the team while the federation finalises Vieira’s appointment.

Vieira, who enjoyed a highly successful playing career with Arsenal and the French national team, has previously managed clubs including Crystal Palace and OGC Nice. He was last in charge of Strasbourg before leaving the French club in 2023.

The former midfielder now appears set for a return to coaching, with Senegal hoping his experience and leadership can help maintain the country’s position among Africa’s football powerhouses.

The FSF is expected to make an official announcement once the contractual situation with Thiaw is resolved, as the Teranga Lions prepare for their upcoming international assignments.
