Patrick Maswanganyi leaves Orlando Pirates for Al-Khaldiya in Bahrain

South Africa attacking midfielder Patrick Maswanganyi has joined Al-Khaldiya from Orlando Pirates, ending his spell with the Johannesburg club after three seasons.

The 28-year-old made the move on 24 August 2026 after beginning the 2026-27 campaign as a regular starter for Pirates. Maswanganyi appeared in each of the club’s first three Betway Premiership matches, providing one assist, and also scored once in the MTN8.

Maswanganyi joined Orlando Pirates from SuperSport United in July 2023 following a free transfer. He made an immediate mark during his time at Pirates, helping the club win the MTN8 in his first season and adding another title in the following campaign.

His honours with Pirates expanded during the 2025-26 season, when he was part of the squad that won the South African league title, the South African Cup and a third MTN8 trophy. The midfielder also won the Nedbank Cup with the club in 2023-24.

Maswanganyi began his senior career with Stars of Africa before moving to Portuguese side Oliveirense in 2019. He later joined Academica U23 and then returned to South Africa with SuperSport United, where his performances preceded his switch to Pirates.

Primarily deployed as an attacking midfielder, Maswanganyi is left-footed and stands 1.78m tall. His departure comes after he had established himself in Pirates’ starting line-up at the beginning of the new domestic season, featuring for 87% of the available league minutes.

He was recognised as the TM-Player of the Season for South Africa in 2024, adding individual recognition to a period in which he collected major domestic honours with Orlando Pirates.

Maswanganyi now continues his career with Al-Khaldiya after completing his move from Orlando Pirates.
