Patrice Carteron Emerges as Leading Candidate for DR Congo National Team Job
Kinshasa, DR Congo — The race to appoint the next head coach of the DR Congo national team is intensifying, with several high-profile names being considered to replace Claude Le Roy, who stepped down in June.
While Muntubile Santos has held the position on an interim basis, the Congolese Football Federation is reportedly exploring a shortlist of experienced candidates, including Frenchmen Jean-Michel Cavalli and Luis Fernandez. Both have expressed interest in taking the helm of the Leopards as preparations ramp up for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
However, the frontrunner appears to be Patrice Carteron, the current coach of Congolese club giants TP Mazembe. The 43-year-old, who previously managed the Mali national team from 2012 to 2014, is said to be seriously considered for the job.
Carteron’s strong credentials in African football, coupled with his existing connection to DR Congo through Mazembe, make him a particularly appealing candidate. There is speculation that he could potentially take on a dual role, continuing his responsibilities with TP Mazembe—who remain in contention in the CAF Champions League—while simultaneously leading the national team through their AFCON campaign.
Carteron’s contract with Mazembe runs until June 2015, aligning conveniently with the conclusion of the next continental tournament. A dual-role appointment would mirror similar setups seen elsewhere on the continent, although it may raise questions around scheduling and focus.
The DR Congo Football Federation has yet to make an official announcement regarding a final decision.
