Pascal Gross confirms Germany retirement after 2026 World Cup

Pascal Gross has announced his Germany career is over, saying he had already decided to retire from international football after the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The 35-year-old midfielder was included in Germany’s squad for the tournament but was left out of new head coach Jurgen Klopp’s first selection. Gross said that omission did not influence his decision to end his international career.

Speaking to Sky, Gross said he had made up his mind before the news became public.

“For me, it was over after the World Cup. I wish the new generation all the best,” he said.

Gross made his Germany debut in September 2023 at the age of 32, beginning an international career that came later than is usual for a senior player.

He went on to win 19 caps and scored one goal for his country. His appearances included Euro 2024 and the 2026 World Cup, after which he brought his time with Germany to a close.

The announcement came soon after Gross produced a decisive performance for Brighton. He scored during their 3-0 win against Arsenal and was named Man of the Match.

That display underlined his continuing importance to the club, despite his decision to withdraw from international football.

Gross has no intention of reducing his involvement with Brighton and plans to continue playing for the club.
