Parma moved out of the Serie A relegation zone after recording a surprise 3-0 win at Atalanta, while Fiorentina came from behind to beat Sassuolo 4-2 and end a five-match winless run.
The results had a major impact at the bottom of the table, with both Parma and Fiorentina collecting important points in their attempts to avoid relegation trouble.
Parma punish Atalanta in Bergamo
Parma claimed their first away league win of the season with a convincing performance at the New Balance Arena, handing Atalanta a fifth consecutive match without a victory in all competitions.
Atalanta made the stronger start and believed they had taken the lead when Nikola Krstovic found the net, but the effort was ruled out for offside. Charles De Ketelaere then missed an opportunity before Parma took the lead against the run of play shortly before the interval.
Giovanni Fabbian rose to head in Vincent Sierro’s corner, giving the visitors an advantage they retained at half-time.
Parma doubled their lead only two minutes after the restart when Davide Zappacosta inadvertently diverted El Bilal Toure’s delivery into his own goal.
The visitors added a third through Simone Lontani, who produced an excellent finish from outside the penalty area to complete a memorable victory.
Atalanta pressed for a response, with Krstovic and Mario Pasalic both coming close. Giovanni Daffara made several important saves, while Pasalic also struck the crossbar.
The defeat left Atalanta 13th in Serie A, while Parma climbed clear of the relegation places.
Fiorentina complete comeback at Sassuolo
Fiorentina ended their five-match winless run in Serie A with an entertaining victory at the Mapei Stadium, although Sassuolo took the lead midway through the first half.
Domenico Berardi and Sebastiano Esposito combined to send Armand Lauriente through, and he finished between David de Gea’s legs to put the home side ahead.
Fiorentina levelled shortly before half-time. Mateo Pellegrino received Alieu Njie’s pass inside the penalty area, turned away from his marker and placed his finish into the bottom corner.
Njie then completed the turnaround five minutes into the second half. After cutting inside from the edge of the area, he curled an impressive effort beyond the goalkeeper.
Sassuolo refused to surrender and equalised through Lauriente. He controlled Nemanja Matic’s clever pass before firing into the roof of the net from a difficult angle.
Fiorentina restored their lead with 11 minutes remaining when Franco Mastantuono converted Pote’s pass, capping an energetic display.
Victor Valdepenas secured the points deep into stoppage time by applying the finishing touch to a quick counterattack.
The result was only Fiorentina’s second league win of the season and lifted them out of the relegation zone. They are level on points with Sassuolo, whose winless run has now reached six matches.
