Paris Saint-Germain’s surprise move for Zion Suzuki puts goalkeeper plans under pressure

A major goalkeeping dispute could be developing at Paris Saint-Germain after the club stepped up its efforts to sign Parma goalkeeper Zion Suzuki shortly before the start of the new season.

The 23-year-old Japan international has emerged as an unexpected target for the French champions, who are already continuing an aggressive recruitment drive in the transfer market.

Paris Saint-Germain have announced the signing of 18-year-old goalkeeper Alessandro Longoni and are also working to complete several other deals which have reached an advanced stage. Those targets include Ajax midfielder Mika Godts and Barcelona forward Ferran Torres.

Manager Luis Enrique is attempting to assemble a squad capable of repeating the success achieved by Paris Saint-Germain last season. However, the club’s renewed interest in Suzuki could create uncertainty in a position that already has a clear hierarchy.

Paris Saint-Germain currently have a goalkeeper in place but have intensified their pursuit of Suzuki in recent hours. The Japan international’s possible arrival would have significant consequences for Lucas Chevalier, who is currently the reserve goalkeeper behind Matvey Safonov.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Chevalier would be “extremely unhappy” if the transfer went through.

Longoni’s arrival has been viewed officially as a signing for the future. Suzuki, having greater experience, would represent a direct and serious challenge to Chevalier’s position within the squad.

Chevalier had previously moved ahead of Safonov in the competition for the starting role, but the French goalkeeper has since lost his place to the Russian. That decline in status has already had international consequences, with Chevalier missing out on participation at the World Cup this summer.

Suzuki, by contrast, made a strong impression at the tournament.

The potential transfer has therefore raised questions over how Paris Saint-Germain would manage their goalkeeper group. The club would have Longoni as a long-term prospect, Safonov occupying the starting position and Suzuki arriving as a credible challenger, while Chevalier’s future role would become increasingly uncertain.

L’Equipe has reported that disagreement over the goalkeeping position could emerge in Paris in the coming days. The tensions would come at a time when Luis Enrique is trying to prepare his team for the new campaign and maintain the momentum generated by last season’s achievements.

Paris Saint-Germain’s activity in the transfer market has already led to significant movement, with Longoni confirmed and negotiations for Godts and Torres progressing. But the proposed move for Suzuki is the development most likely to disrupt the balance within the squad.
