Paris Saint-Germain snatch Lille draw with two goals in stoppage time

Paris Saint-Germain scored twice in the closing moments to rescue a 2-2 draw at Lille and deny the hosts a historic victory in the opening match of the second round of Ligue 1.

Lille had appeared set to claim all three points after taking a two-goal lead at Stade Pierre-Mauroy on Friday night. However, Vitinha reduced the deficit in the first minute of added time before Marquinhos headed in an equaliser five minutes later.

The result extended Paris Saint-Germain’s difficult start to their title defence. The reigning champions have failed to win either of their opening two Ligue 1 matches for the first time since the 2020-21 season, although their late recovery prevented Lille from completing a notable victory over the champions.

Lille made the brighter start and quickly exposed uncertainty in the Paris Saint-Germain defence. The visitors almost opened the scoring in the fifth minute when Ferran Torres broke through on goal, but goalkeeper Berke Ozer disrupted the attack.

Achraf Hakimi then saw his effort strike the right-hand post as Paris Saint-Germain threatened despite Lille’s early pressure.

The home side soon began creating chances of their own, with Olivier Giroud, Ethan Mbappe and Felix Correia all testing Matvey Safonov’s goal. Lille took the lead in the 21st minute after Giroud produced an excellent pass behind the Paris Saint-Germain defence.

Hakon Arnar Haraldsson reached the ball and drove a powerful finish into the net to put Lille ahead.

Paris Saint-Germain struggled to respond with their usual authority. They were without Ousmane Dembele and Joao Neves, while Ferran Torres was unable to reproduce the impact he had made in the opening round.

Lille remained compact and well organised without the ball, preserving their advantage until half-time.

Paris Saint-Germain manager Luis Enrique made a change at the interval, replacing Desire Doue with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. The visitors gradually improved after the restart, winning possession in more advanced areas and putting Lille under increasing pressure.

That dominance, though, rarely produced clear opportunities. Kvaratskhelia and Vitinha both threatened, but Lille continued to restrict the champions to limited openings.

As Lille dropped deeper, the hosts appeared increasingly focused on protecting their lead. They then struck again in the 84th minute, with Giroud setting up new signing Dilan Bakwa.

Bakwa moved inside from the flank before sending a superb left-footed shot into the far corner. At that stage, Lille looked certain to secure a famous win and take maximum points from the defending champions.

Paris Saint-Germain refused to accept defeat. Vitinha gave them hope in the 90th minute plus one, producing a spectacular strike to halve the deficit.

Five minutes later, Vitinha delivered a precise cross into the area. Marquinhos rose to meet it and headed the ball into the net, completing a dramatic late comeback and securing a point for the visitors.

Lille were left to reflect on a victory that had been within their grasp until the final moments, while Paris Saint-Germain continued to drop points at the beginning of their attempt to retain the Ligue 1 title.
