Paris FC captain Moustapha Mbow expresses gratitude after Senegal 2026 World Cup call-up
Senegal defender Moustapha Mbow has expressed his pride and gratitude after being named in Pape Thiaw’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup set to take place in the United States, Canada and Mexico this summer.
The Paris FC captain earned his place in the Lions of Teranga squad following an outstanding 2025/26 campaign in France, where he established himself as one of the club’s most consistent and influential performers.
His commanding displays at the heart of the defence, leadership qualities and consistency throughout the season convinced Pape Thiaw to include him in Senegal’s squad for football’s biggest tournament.
Following the announcement, the defender took time to thank everyone who contributed to his rise, paying tribute to his family, coaches, teammates, club officials and supporters.
“I am immensely proud to have been selected for the 2026 World Cup,” Mbow said in an emotional statement after receiving the call-up.
“This is the perfect moment for me to thank everyone who has supported me in achieving this goal. To my family, and to Paris FC as a whole — our directors, my teammates and all the club’s staff — I am writing these few words today to express my deep gratitude following this emotionally charged 2025/2026 season.”
The Senegal international also reserved special praise for the coaches who played a key role in his development during the campaign. He highlighted the trust and confidence shown in him, especially after being handed leadership responsibilities at the club.
“A special thank you to Stéphane Gili, Antoine Kombouaré and your various staff. Your support, your high standards and, above all, the trust you have shown in me by entrusting me with the captain’s armband have touched me deeply,” he added.
Mbow’s performances this season have drawn widespread admiration in France and Senegal alike. Beyond his defensive solidity, the centre-back has displayed maturity, composure and leadership beyond his years, becoming a central figure in Paris FC’s campaign.
His call-up is viewed as a reward for his hard work and rapid development over recent seasons. The defender has steadily risen through the ranks and is now set to experience his first FIFA World Cup with Senegal.
The former youth international also acknowledged the support of Paris FC fans, who backed him throughout the season.
“Finally, a huge thank you to the Paris FC supporters. Now, let’s set our sights on the World Cup. With my deepest gratitude,” he concluded.
Mbow now joins a talented Senegal squad preparing for another major international tournament under Pape Thiaw. The Lions of Teranga head into the World Cup with strong ambitions as they seek to make a significant impact on the global stage.
For Mbow, the tournament represents not only a personal milestone but also the culmination of years of hard work, perseverance and steady progress in his career.
