Senegal Coach Pape Thiaw sees USA friendly as crucial World Cup test
Senegal coach Pape Thiaw has described his side’s upcoming friendly against the United States as an important opportunity to measure the team’s readiness for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, as the Lions of Teranga continue their preparations for the global tournament.
Speaking during a press conference on Saturday, the Senegal manager outlined the work already carried out with his squad and stressed the importance of facing a strong opponent capable of replicating the intensity and challenges expected at a World Cup.
Thiaw explained that preparations had begun in Dakar with a group that was almost complete and said the encounter against the United States would provide valuable insight into the team’s current level.
According to remarks reported by Iwsport, the Senegal coach views the fixture as more than just a friendly. He believes matches of this nature offer the chance to identify strengths and weaknesses while exposing players to situations similar to those they are likely to encounter during the World Cup.
The United States, he noted, possess enough quality to test Senegal across several areas of the pitch. Thiaw also highlighted the determination he expects from the American side, making the contest an ideal assessment for his players as they continue their build-up to the tournament.
Attention also remains focused on the fitness of Senegal captain Kalidou Koulibaly. The experienced defender’s condition has been the subject of discussion, but Thiaw stopped short of confirming whether he would be available.
Instead, the coach revealed that Koulibaly’s recovery is being closely monitored by the medical team. While encouraged by the progress made so far, he indicated that a definitive update would only be provided once there is greater certainty regarding the defender’s readiness.
During the media briefing, Thiaw was also asked about Senegal’s historic victory over France at the 2002 World Cup. Reflecting on that memorable occasion, he recalled experiencing the event as a player before contrasting it with his current responsibilities as national team coach.
He explained that his role today is very different, with the responsibility now falling on him to prepare and guide the team while providing players with the tools required to achieve success on the international stage.
Thiaw also addressed Senegal’s position as reigning African champions. While acknowledging the significance of winning AFCON, he stressed that the achievement now belongs in the past.
The coach described the World Cup as a completely different challenge, featuring elite opposition and demanding consistency over a much longer campaign.
Nevertheless, he expressed confidence in his squad’s mentality and determination, insisting his players are focused on achieving the best possible outcome when the tournament begins.
