Pape Thiaw speaks out after Senegal’s dramatic AFCON victory

Senegal coach Pape Thiaw has spoken publicly following his team’s dramatic victory in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, addressing both the triumph and the controversial incidents that marked the final.

In a post on his official Instagram account, Thiaw expressed pride in guiding Senegal to their second AFCON title while explaining the decisions made during the tense closing moments of the match.

“For Senegal, my heart, my soul, my spirit are anchored in this beautiful country which has given me everything and for it, I would do the impossible,” he wrote.

“We experienced an exceptional tournament with magnificent organization, which unfortunately ended in a tragic fashion.

It was never my intention to go against the principles of the game I love so much. I simply tried to protect my players from injustice.

What some may perceive as a violation of the rules is nothing more than an emotional reaction to the unfairness of the situation.”

Thiaw explained that after careful consideration, he and his staff decided to resume the match to secure the trophy, emphasising that his actions were driven by emotion rather than defiance.

“I apologize if I have offended anyone, but football fans will understand that emotion is an integral part of this sport,” he added.

The Senegalese coach also took time to thank the nation and those who supported the team throughout the competition.

“I would like to thank our President of the Republic and the Minister of Sports who provided us with the best possible conditions, our Federation for its unwavering support, and our fans who have moved mountains with us,” he wrote.

Thiaw paid tribute to his family, acknowledging the inspiration he draws from his late mother, father, wife, and children.

He concluded by praising his squad: “And finally, my lads, these 28 warriors who gave their blood, sweat, and soul for their nation. It’s a pleasure to lead you because, beyond being legends, you are exceptional people!”

While Senegal now celebrates the addition of a second star to the Lions of Teranga’s record, Thiaw’s comments come amid potential disciplinary action from CAF following the events of the final.
