Pape Matar Sarr wins over Luciano Spalletti after rocky start at Juventus
Pape Matar Sarr was not the midfielder Luciano Spalletti originally wanted at Juventus, but a few weeks have been enough to change his standing completely.
Juventus had initially pursued Franck Kessie, seeking power, energy and presence in midfield. When that move failed, Sarr arrived from Tottenham more as an alternative than a priority signing.
According to Tuttosport, Spalletti was cautious about him, while the club’s directors believed in his potential and presented the coach with data and video evidence from his final Spurs season.
The pitch has since done the talking. After recovering from minor muscle problems, Sarr showed his ability to cover ground, win duels, recover possession and support attacks. His displays against NEC and especially Atalanta helped Juventus regain control in midfield.
With Manuel Locatelli and Khephren Thuram injured, Tuttosport believes Sarr could now start alongside Douglas Luiz. He also impressed for Senegal during the international break, completing all 27 passes in one match.
He must still prove himself over more Serie A games, but Sarr could begin against Cagliari and make the place his own.
