Pape Matar Sarr signals commitment to Premier League as AS Monaco abandon interest

AS Monaco are set to end their pursuit of Pape Matar Sarr after the midfielder made clear that he does not want to leave England for Ligue 1 this summer.

The Principality club had identified the Senegal international as a major target to strengthen their midfield and had followed his situation closely. However, their efforts have not been enough to persuade the player to return to French football, with the negotiations now expected to be formally declared unsuccessful.

Sarr’s profile was highly attractive to AS Monaco’s sporting leadership. The young midfielder’s qualities and status as an African champion made him a particularly appealing option for the club as they looked to reinforce the centre of the pitch.

Despite that interest, the arguments offered by Ligue 1 have failed to change his preference. Sarr is determined to continue his development at the highest level and currently favours extending his career in England rather than taking up a new challenge in France.

The midfielder has settled well into the intensity and demands of the Premier League. That experience has strengthened his desire to remain in English football, where he wants to establish himself over the long term.

Sarr is therefore not considering a move to the French top flight during the current summer window. His position has left AS Monaco with little room to continue pursuing a deal, despite the importance they attached to the transfer.

The player’s determination to stay in England has now led the club to draw a definitive line under what had been regarded as a priority target. AS Monaco must instead accept that their interest will not result in an agreement.

For Sarr, the immediate objective is to continue progressing within the Premier League and to secure a lasting place in English football. His preference has effectively settled the matter, with the proposed move to the Principality no longer on the agenda.
