Pape Matar Sarr told Senegalese supporters they were “the true champions of Africa” as he joined nationwide celebrations following Senegal’s triumph at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, despite struggling with fitness concerns.
The Tottenham Hotspur midfielder insisted on taking part in the jubilant scenes in Dakar, where thousands of fans lined the streets to honour the Lions of Teranga after their historic continental success.
His presence, despite a fragile physical condition, underlined the importance he places on representing both the national team and the wider Senegalese public.
Speaking after the celebrations, Sarr highlighted the unique bond between the players and supporters, describing the scenes in the capital as the very essence of wearing the national jersey. For the 22-year-old, the victory went beyond football, symbolising unity, pride and collective achievement at a national level.
The midfielder’s contribution to Senegal’s success was also recognised at the highest level of the state. During a ceremony attended by senior officials, Sarr was awarded the rank of Commander of the National Order of the Lion, one of the country’s most prestigious honours.
The distinction is reserved for individuals who have made an exceptional contribution to the nation, and its presentation to the young midfielder reflected his growing stature both on and off the pitch.
Deeply moved by the recognition, Sarr chose to dedicate the honour not to himself, but to the Senegalese people, repeatedly crediting their support as a driving force behind the team’s achievements.
He stressed that the energy and passion shown by fans throughout the tournament and during the celebrations in Dakar gave meaning to the sacrifices made by the players.
Despite ongoing physical discomfort, Sarr said he never considered missing the celebrations, explaining that sharing the moment with his teammates and supporters was a responsibility he felt compelled to fulfil.
His determination was widely praised, with many supporters viewing it as a reflection of the commitment that has come to define the current generation of Senegalese internationals.
In a message addressed directly to the public, Sarr summed up his emotions and gratitude, reinforcing the idea that Senegal’s AFCON success belonged to the entire nation.
“This popular fervor experienced in the streets of Dakar is what gives meaning to this jersey and to what we represent together.
Even with my physical limitations, I was determined to be there, to experience every moment alongside my teammates and to share this immense joy with an entire nation.
Being elevated to the rank of Commander of the National Order of the Lion of Senegal by His Excellency the President of the Republic is a tremendous honor, which I accept with humility and pride.
Dear Senegalese people, you are the true champions of Africa. Thank you, once again. And see you very soon for new, even more glorious adventures.”
As Senegal continues to celebrate its place at the summit of African football, Sarr’s words have resonated strongly, capturing the spirit of a triumph built on both sporting excellence and an unbreakable connection with the people.
