Senegal international Pape Gueye has opened up about his decision to represent the Lions of Teranga instead of France, describing it as one of the best choices of his career.
The Villarreal midfielder, who was born in Montreuil, France, was eligible to play for Les Bleus but ultimately chose to represent the country of his parents.
Since making his debut in November 2022, Gueye has become a key player in Aliou Cissé’s midfield, playing alongside Idrissa Gueye, Pape Matar Sarr, and Lamine Camara.
“It’s one of the best decisions of my career, to represent Senegal. Playing for your country is different from playing for a club. The national team is about identity and pride. When you wear that jersey, you have a responsibility to give everything.”
Gueye revealed that he initially hesitated when Senegal coach Aliou Cissé approached him, as he had just joined Marseille and wanted to focus on establishing himself at club level.
However, after careful thought, he realized that his heart belonged to Senegal.
“Aliou Cissé called me, but I had just arrived at Marseille and had a lot of goals to achieve. I told him I needed time. But when I finally joined the team, I was amazed by the spirit. We are like a family.”
The midfielder also addressed the common concerns of dual-national players, explaining that some hesitate because they have never been to Africa or do not know what to expect.
“I’ve spoken to other dual-national players about joining Senegal. Some have never been to Africa, so they don’t know what it’s like. But I tell them—there’s nothing better than representing your homeland, the country of your parents.”
Gueye will be one of Senegal’s key players at AFCON 2025 in Morocco, where the defending champions have been drawn in Group D alongside DR Congo, Benin, and Botswana.
The midfielder is confident that the Lions of Teranga can go all the way once again.
“We are coming to win. Our goal is simple—bring the AFCON trophy back to Senegal.”
With Senegal boasting a strong squad that includes Sadio Mané, Kalidou Koulibaly, and rising star Lamine Camara, Gueye’s decision to represent his country looks more justified than ever.
As he puts it: “Senegal is my home. And playing for your home is the greatest honour.”
