Pape Gueye admits sleepless nights after Villarreal's humiliating defeat to PSG

Villarreal midfielder Pape Gueye has revealed that he struggled to sleep following his team’s humiliating 6-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League.

The Senegal international endured the heaviest defeat of his career on Tuesday night as the Spanish side were overwhelmed by the European champions at the Estadio de la Cerámica.

Speaking to DAZN, Gueye admitted that the result left him deeply frustrated as he tried to understand how Villarreal had conceded six goals.

“It’s hard to sleep. I haven’t slept much… We’re trying to understand what happened,” the midfielder revealed.

He added: “It’s the first time I’ve conceded six goals in a match.”

Determined to understand what went wrong, Gueye immediately reviewed footage of the encounter alongside his personal video analyst, examining the movements and attacking combinations that caused Villarreal so many problems.

Gueye analyses PSG’s movement

The 27-year-old identified Paris Saint-Germain’s collective movement as one of the biggest challenges Villarreal faced during the encounter.

Rather than focusing exclusively on the movement of the French champions’ midfielders, Gueye explained that players across the team constantly changed positions, making defensive responsibilities difficult to manage.

“Their midfielders weren’t the only ones moving around. It was a real team effort,” he explained.

Reflecting on the difficulty of tracking PSG’s attacking players, he added: “There were times when Hakimi was next to me, the young Mayulu… They really knew how to move around.”

PSG demonstrated their attacking superiority by scoring four goals within the opening 16 minutes, with João Neves, Désiré Doué, Senny Mayulu and Fabián Ruiz all finding the net.

Ruiz added another goal after the break before substitute David Boly completed the 6-0 victory in the 78th minute.

The defeat represents a major setback for Villarreal’s Champions League campaign, while Gueye and his teammates must now turn their attention to recovering from the disappointment and improving their performances in the coming matches.
