Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) Communications Director Ibrahim Sannie Daara says more than 400 coaches have applied for the vacant Black Stars head coach position.

Ghana are searching for a new head coach following the departure of Portuguese trainer Carlos Queiroz after a disappointing start to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

Queiroz left his post after the Black Stars suffered consecutive defeats against Côte d’Ivoire and The Gambia in their opening two matches in Group C.

A five-member committee established by the GFA and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation is tasked with recommending a successor, with its report expected to be submitted on Thursday.

Speaking in an interview with Accra-based Asempa FM, Sannie Daara, who currently works as a senior media officer at the Confederation of African Football (CAF), said the number of applicants reflected the respect Ghana commands in international football.

“More than 400 coaches have applied for the Black Stars job,” he said.

“Most of the coaches are looking for jobs, and most of them respect Ghana due to how we play. I can confirm that over 400 coaches have applied for the job,” he added.

Meanwhile, the GFA has announced that an interim technical team will oversee Ghana’s next two AFCON qualifying matches against Somalia next month.

The Black Stars are scheduled to face Somalia in back-to-back fixtures on matchdays three and four, with the games set to be played at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Ghana sit bottom of Group C without a point after their opening defeats and face an uphill task to secure qualification for the 2027 tournament.

The four-time African champions are also seeking to return to the continental showpiece after missing the 2025 AFCON in Morocco.
