Newly appointed Kenya head coach Benni McCarthy says they aim to develop a strong team identity and play exciting football to make the country proud.
The Bafana Bafana legend was unveiled on Monday as the new head coach of the Harambee Stars on a two-year deal.
Speaking at his unveiling, the former Manchester United striker coach said, “I am honoured to take on this role and excited about the journey ahead with the Kenyan national team. I have studied the talent in this country, and I believe there is immense potential to compete at the highest level.
“Together with my coaching team, including Vasili Manousakis, Moeneeb Josephs, and Pilela Maposa, we are committed to building a structured, disciplined, and competitive squad.
“Our goal is to develop a strong team identity, play exciting football, and make the nation proud. I look forward to working with the players, the federation, and the passionate Kenyan fans to achieve success,” he added.
McCarthy and his team will immediately take charge as Kenya prepares for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Gambia and Gabon.
McCarthy will be assisted by Vasili Manousakis, Moeneeb Josephs as Goalkeepers Coach, and Pilela Maposa as Performance Analyst.
Benni McCarthy has previously coached Amazulu and Cape Town City in his native South Africa, taking the former to the group stages of the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League for the first time ever.
As a player, McCarthy was a decorated striker and was the joint top scorer at the 1998 AFCON. At club level, he won the UEFA Champions League with FC Porto and also had a fabled career with Blackburn Rovers and West Ham in England before finishing his playing career at home with Orlando Pirates in 2013.
