Azzedine Ounahi injury

Morocco international Azzedine Ounahi faces a potential spell on the sidelines after suffering a suspected hamstring injury during Panathinaikos’ 5-1 victory over Asteras Tripolis in the Greek Super League on Sunday.

The 26-year-old is expected to undergo an MRI scan on Monday afternoon to determine the extent of the injury, with initial medical assessments suggesting the problem could be serious.

The injury raises concerns over Ounahi’s availability for Morocco’s upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying matches against Niger in November.

Early assessment raises concerns

According to Greek outlet Sport24, Panathinaikos informed journalists that the initial assessment indicated an injury to the biceps femoris, one of the muscles that make up the hamstring at the back of the thigh.

Greek public broadcaster ERT Sports also reported that the early indications were concerning, with further examinations required to establish the severity of the injury and the midfielder’s potential recovery period.

Ounahi sustained the injury in the opening stages of Sunday’s match at the Olympic Stadium in Athens. He went down in the 16th minute while attempting to reach the ball and was unable to continue.

After receiving medical assistance, the Moroccan midfielder was carried off on a stretcher in the 19th minute, with Andreas coming on as his replacement.

Panathinaikos confirmed his early departure in its official match report but did not disclose further details about the nature or seriousness of the injury.

Morocco await news ahead of Niger fixtures

Ounahi’s condition will be closely monitored by Morocco’s coaching staff as the Atlas Lions prepare for their November fixtures in the 2027 AFCON qualifiers.

Morocco are scheduled to face Niger twice, with the first encounter set to take place on 13 November at the Mohammed V Sports Complex in Casablanca.

The teams will meet again on 17 November at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat.

Ounahi has remained an important member of Morocco’s midfield under head coach Mohamed Ouahbi, making his fitness a concern for the national team ahead of the international window.

However, his availability for the two matches will depend on the outcome of the medical examinations and his subsequent recovery.

MRI scan to determine recovery timeline

While Panathinaikos secured a convincing 5-1 win over Asteras Tripolis, the focus has shifted to the condition of the Moroccan midfielder.

No recovery timeline has been confirmed, and the results of Monday’s MRI scan are expected to provide a clearer indication of the injury’s severity.

Until further medical information becomes available, uncertainty remains over whether Ounahi will be fit to join Morocco for their crucial November qualifying matches.
