Oumar Barry: AS Gubbio sign towering French-Malian left-back from Verona U20

AS Gubbio have signed left-back Oumar Barry from Verona U20, with the 20-year-old defender completing a move to the Serie C club on 8 July 2026.

Barry, who stands at 1.93m and favours his left foot, joins Gubbio after two seasons in Italian youth football and will now take his first step into the professional ranks. Born in Mantes-La-Jolie on 17 March 2006, he is eligible to represent both France and Mali at international level.

The defender arrives from Veronas Primavera set-up, where he featured in Italys top youth division, Primavera 1. His move underlines Gubbios strategy of targeting physically imposing and technically developed young players from higher-tier academies to strengthen their squad for the Serie C campaign.

Barry has amassed significant youth experience despite his age. Across domestic youth competitions he has made over 70 appearances, including 39 in Primavera 1, where he contributed one goal and one assist while logging more than 2,100 minutes of action. He has also featured in the Coppa Primavera and national youth leagues in both France and Italy, demonstrating consistency at under-18 and under-19 levels.

Before his switch to Verona U20 in July 2024, Barry spent time with Genoas under-18s, a spell highlighted by winning the Italian Under-18 youth championship in the 2023-24 season. That title-winning campaign marked his breakthrough in Italy after moving from GFC Ajaccios under-19 side, which he had joined from Mantois 78s under-17s.

His progression through multiple academies in France and Italy has given him experience in different tactical systems and competitive environments, from the Coupe Gambardella in France to play-off finals at under-18 level in Italy. That grounding is expected to ease his transition into senior football in Serie C.

Barrys arrival adds depth on the left side of Gubbios defence ahead of the new season and continues the Umbrian clubs recent pattern of recruiting from Primavera squads across the country.
