Morocco coach Ouahbi meets Nayef Aguerd ahead of World Cup decision
Mohamed Ouahbi has travelled to Marseille to meet Nayef Aguerd as concerns grow over the defender’s fitness ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
With the final squad announcement approaching, the Morocco coach has stepped up his preparations by holding direct discussions with key players.
His visit to Aguerd was driven by uncertainty surrounding the centre-back’s physical condition following surgery earlier this year.
The Olympique de Marseille player has been sidelined since March, prompting speculation about his availability for the group stage of the tournament.
Reports had raised doubts over whether he would recover in time to feature from the start of the competition.
According to information reported by Assabah, the meeting was intended to provide clarity before the coaching staff finalise their squad selection.
The situation is being closely monitored, given Aguerd’s importance within the national team setup.
There are, however, encouraging signs regarding his recovery. The defender is currently undergoing an intensive rehabilitation programme and is expected to return to group training on 15 May.
The timeline reflects a clear objective: to regain full match fitness in time for the World Cup.
Despite his recent absence from competitive action, Aguerd remains a central figure in Morocco’s defensive structure.
His experience and leadership are seen as vital components in maintaining stability at the back.
The coaching staff are understood to be relying on his presence to anchor the defence, provided his recovery continues without complications.
If his rehabilitation progresses as expected, he is likely to reclaim a starting role in the heart of the back line during the tournament.
With the countdown to the World Cup continuing, Ouahbi’s visit underlines the importance placed on Aguerd’s condition, as Morocco seek to ensure their key players are fully prepared for the global stage.
