Osinachi Ohale retires from international football after 16 years and five WAFCON titles

Super Falcons defender Osinachi Ohale has retired from international football after 16 years with Nigeria, bringing the curtain down on a decorated career that produced five Women’s Africa Cup of Nations titles and four FIFA Women’s World Cup appearances.

The 34-year-old announced her decision on Friday in an emotional message on Instagram, reflecting on her journey from a young girl dreaming of representing Nigeria to becoming one of the country’s most experienced defenders.

Ohale leaves the international stage with 86 caps, seven WAFCON appearances and four World Cup tournaments. She was part of Nigeria’s continental triumphs in 2010, 2014, 2016, 2018 and 2024, officially staged in Morocco in 2025.

“After 16 years of wearing the Nigerian jersey, representing my country, and giving everything I had to the beautiful game, I have made the very difficult decision to retire from international football,” she wrote.

“From the young girl who first dreamed of wearing the green and white, to the woman who had the honour of doing so for 86 caps, I can only look back with a heart overflowing with gratitude.”

CAF recognises Ohale as one of only five players to have won the WAFCON title five times, alongside fellow Nigerians Florence Ajayi, Perpetua Nkwocha and Francisca Ordega.

Four World Cups and a defining moment

Ohale represented Nigeria at the 2011, 2015, 2019 and 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cups, with the latter tournament producing one of the most memorable moments of her international career.

She scored Nigeria’s second goal in their 3-2 victory over hosts Australia and was named Player of the Match following an impressive performance.

She also represented the Super Falcons at the 2024 Olympic Games and featured at seven editions of the WAFCON.

Ohale was part of Nigeria’s squad at the 2026 WAFCON in Morocco, where the title holders opened their campaign with a 3-2 defeat to Malawi before recovering with victories over Zambia and Egypt.

Nigeria’s campaign eventually ended in the quarter-finals against Cameroon, followed by defeat to South Africa in the African World Cup play-off.

Ohale started all five of Nigeria’s matches at the tournament and played every minute before bringing her international career to an end.

‘I would choose Nigeria every single time’

Despite the disappointing conclusion to her final major tournament, Ohale said she had no regrets about her decision to represent Nigeria.

“I gave this jersey my youth, my strength, my sweat, my tears, and my heart. And if I had to do it all over again, I would choose Nigeria every single time,” she wrote.

She thanked her teammates, coaches, staff, family, friends and the Nigeria Football Federation for their roles throughout her career, while also acknowledging the supporters who followed the Super Falcons through their successes and setbacks.

“To the Nigerian fans: thank you for believing in us, supporting us, celebrating with us, and standing by us through every high and every low,” she added.

“Your love made wearing this jersey even more special.”

A decorated career continues at club level

Ohale’s club career has taken her through Nigeria, the United States, Sweden, Spain, Italy and Mexico, with spells at Rivers Angels, Delta Queens, Houston Dash, Vittsjö, Växjö, Real Madrid, Roma, Madrid CFF, Alavés and Pachuca.

She now steps away from international football but remains active at club level.

“Today, I say goodbye to international football with no regrets — only gratitude. 86 caps. 16 years. 4 World Cups. 7 WAFCON. 5 WAFCON titles.

“But the greatest achievement of all is knowing that I had the privilege to serve my country. Forever a Super Falcon. Forever Nigerian.”
