Orlando Pirates win race for South Africa defender Thabang Matuludi
South African Premiership champions Orlando Pirates have strengthened their squad ahead of the new season after reaching an agreement to sign Bafana Bafana defender Thabang Matuludi.
The highly-rated right-back has committed his future to the Buccaneers by signing a three-year contract, with the club retaining the option to extend the deal for an additional year.
Matuludi’s move to the Sea Robbers ends months of speculation surrounding his future. The defender had attracted interest from several clubs, including fierce rivals Kaizer Chiefs, who were believed to be monitoring his situation closely. However, Pirates have ultimately won the race for his signature, adding another sought-after talent to their ranks.
His transfer mirrors the recent case of Oswin Appollis, another player who was heavily linked with a move to Chiefs before eventually opting to join Orlando Pirates. The latest acquisition further highlights the Buccaneers’ determination to secure some of the most promising talents available in South African football.
Pirates identified Matuludi as a priority target following the departure of Thabiso Lebitso to Stellenbosch FC. The club’s technical team viewed the Bafana Bafana international as the ideal candidate to fill the void and provide additional quality and depth in the defensive department.
Known for his pace, defensive discipline and ability to contribute in attack, Matuludi is expected to bring added balance to the right side of the Pirates backline. His versatility and experience at the highest level of domestic football should make him a valuable asset as the club prepares for another demanding campaign on multiple fronts.
Upon his arrival, Matuludi is expected to compete directly with Deano van Rooyen for a starting berth at right-back. The competition between the two players is likely to increase the overall quality within the squad and provide the coaching staff with greater tactical flexibility.
For Pirates, the signing represents another statement of intent as they look to build on their league-winning success and maintain their status as one of the country’s dominant forces. With domestic and continental ambitions firmly in their sights, securing a player of Matuludi’s calibre is viewed as a significant boost ahead of the 2026/27 season.
