Orlando Pirates suffer first pre-season defeat to Al Ittihad in Spain

South African Premiership champions Orlando Pirates suffered their first defeat of their pre-season campaign after losing 3-2 to Saudi Pro League giants Al-Ittihad in a high-profile friendly encounter in Spain.

The Buccaneers, who are currently preparing for the new season during their training camp in Europe, were unable to maintain their unbeaten run after falling short against the Saudi Arabian outfit.

The match was Pirates’ third pre-season fixture in Spain, following an encouraging start that saw them record a victory and a draw in their opening two friendly matches.

However, Abdeslam Ouaddou’s side found the challenge against Al-Ittihad much tougher as the Saudi giants secured a narrow win in an entertaining contest.

Despite the defeat, Pirates showed attacking promise, with Thalente Mbatha and Yanela Mbuthuma finding the back of the net for the South African champions.

Mbatha continued to underline his importance to the team by contributing in midfield, while Mbuthuma also took advantage of the opportunity to impress as Pirates continue their preparations for the upcoming campaign.

The encounter provided coach Ouaddou with another valuable opportunity to assess his squad, test different tactical approaches and give players crucial minutes as they build fitness ahead of competitive action.

Pirates have been using their time in Spain to sharpen their squad ahead of a demanding season that will see them defend their domestic title while also competing on multiple fronts.

The friendly against Al-Ittihad also offered the Buccaneers a chance to measure themselves against top-level opposition from another footballing environment, with the Saudi club featuring several quality players.
