Orlando Pirates stumble at home as Siwelele dent South African Premiership title push

Orlando Pirates suffered a setback in the Betway Premiership title race after being held to a 1-1 draw by Bloemfontein Celtic at Orlando Stadium on Saturday.

The Buccaneers created several opportunities and dominated large spells of the contest but were unable to find a decisive second goal against a resilient Siwelele side that extended their impressive unbeaten run dating back to November. The result leaves Pirates reflecting on missed chances in a match they would have expected to win on home soil.

Despite Pirates’ early pressure, it was the visitors who struck first through former Buccaneers winger Vincent Pule. The forward collected possession on the edge of the area, skipped past a couple of defenders and drove a low effort into the bottom-right corner to stun the home crowd. The goal was notable given Pirates’ defensive solidity this season, with the strike marking only the ninth they have conceded in 21 league matches.

Pirates pushed hard for an equaliser but found Ricardo Goss in inspired form between the posts for the visitors. The goalkeeper produced a series of important saves as the hosts struggled to convert their dominance into goals.

The Buccaneers’ attacking play often lacked composure in the final third. Relebohile Mofokeng skewed a promising opportunity wide from the edge of the area, while Oswin Appollis fired over the crossbar. Defender Nkosinathi Sibisi also came close but failed to turn home a loose ball from close range.

Pirates eventually restored parity early in the second half when Tshepang Moremi finished calmly after being picked out in space by Thalente Mbatha. The composed strike marked Moremi’s fourth league goal of the season and further highlighted his impact since joining from AmaZulu FC at the start of the campaign.

Moremi nearly added another from a similar situation later in the match but was denied by Goss, who also recovered quickly after a misplaced pass to keep the forward out once again.

Substitute Sipho Mbule injected energy into Pirates’ attack in the closing stages, helping the hosts maintain pressure during the final 20 minutes. However, clear chances remained elusive. Mofokeng directed a free header straight at Goss, while Evidence Makgopa saw a spectacular volley flash narrowly wide.

The draw could prove costly for Pirates in the title race. They remain just one point ahead of Mamelodi Sundowns, who still have a game in hand against Marumo Gallants and could reclaim top spot if they secure victory.
