Orlando Pirates striker André de Jong has hailed his teammate Oswin Appollis for his outstanding contribution towards the clubs treble-winning campaign.

The former Polokwane City midfielder played a crucial role as the Buccaneers secured a historic haul of the MTN8, Carling Knockout Cup, and the Betway Premiership title.

Across an impressive campaign, Appollis registered 43 appearances, scoring 12 goals and contributing nine assists, underlining his consistency and attacking output from midfield.

Speaking on SuperSport’s Extra Time, De Jong highlighted the midfielder’s striking technique and composure in front of goal.

“I think some of the goals he scored were from outside the box this season, I think the big thing about him is his backlift is minimal,” De Jong said.

“I think he can obviously strike a ball from basically a standing start as well.”

Beyond his technical qualities, De Jong also emphasised Appollis’ mental strength and ability to influence matches during decisive moments.

“But yeah, his contribution to the team has been incredible. I think also in some big moments where he’s almost taken the team upon himself, taken it a bit between his teeth and turned the games for us.”

Appollis’ performances have not only been vital for Orlando Pirates domestically but have also earned him recognition at international level. He is currently with the South Africa national football team in Mexico ahead of the World Cup, where expectations are growing around his role in Hugo Broos’s squad.

With form, confidence, and momentum on his side following a trophy-laden season, Appollis is expected to be one of the key figures as South Africa prepare for their global campaign.
