Orlando Pirates sign Stellenbosch midfielder Ronaldo Adams

Orlando Pirates have reportedly signed 18-year-old midfielder Ronaldo Adams from Stellenbosch FC, with the younger brother of the late Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns player Jayden Adams beginning a new chapter in Johannesburg.

The move has added another talking point around the MTN8 headlines, although Ronaldo’s arrival at the Buccaneers is also an opportunity for him to establish his own identity in the game.

Adams came through the Stellenbosch setup and has already begun training with Orlando Pirates’ DStv Diski Challenge team, according to reports. The club are understood to have been impressed by his early displays since he joined them in Johannesburg.

Pirates are believed to be integrating the teenager into their development structure, where regular involvement at DDC level is expected to help him adapt to a new environment and the demands of playing for one of South Africa’s biggest clubs.

The family connection to Jayden has inevitably brought added attention to the transfer. Jayden, who came through at Stellenbosch before moving to Mamelodi Sundowns and representing Bafana Bafana, passed away in July.

However, Ronaldo is now taking a separate route through the Pirates system and will be focused on his own progress rather than comparisons with his late brother.

His immediate task is to establish himself within the DDC side and use the opportunity to show what he can offer. The move also gives him the chance to work at a club with a strong record of developing young players.

According to reports, Orlando Pirates are continuing to strengthen their development ranks as they seek players who could eventually progress into the senior team.

For Ronaldo, that process has started with training at DStv Diski Challenge level. His performances there will provide the platform for him to become familiar with the club and demonstrate his ability.

While the circumstances of the move will continue to bring memories of Jayden into focus, Ronaldo now has the opportunity to build a football career of his own at Orlando Pirates.

That journey, according to reports, has already begun in Johannesburg.
