Orlando Pirates send Daniel Msendami, Abdoulaye Mariko to Marumo Gallants on loan

Orlando Pirates have sent midfielders Daniel Msendami and Abdoulaye Mariko to Marumo Gallants on season-long loan deals as the Soweto giants look to provide the pair with regular playing opportunities.

The Buccaneers confirmed the departures on Wednesday, announcing that both players will spend the remainder of the current campaign with Gallants.

The move comes after Msendami and Mariko struggled to establish themselves as regulars at Pirates despite joining the club with high expectations at the beginning of last season.

“The club can also confirm that Daniel Msendami and Abdoulaye Mariko will move in the opposite direction, joining Marumo Gallants on season-long loan agreements,” Pirates said in a statement.

Msendami, Mariko fall down pecking order

Msendami made just 11 appearances across all competitions last season, with his opportunities becoming increasingly limited as competition for places intensified.

Mariko endured a similar spell at the Buccaneers, featuring 12 times, with most of those outings coming from the bench.

Their lack of regular football has now prompted Pirates to sanction temporary moves away from the club, giving both midfielders an opportunity to rebuild their form and confidence at Gallants.

The pair have found themselves competing for places in a squad filled with options, while head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has had several players available for the midfield positions.

Young competition makes breakthrough harder

The situation has become even more challenging for Msendami and Mariko following Pirates’ recruitment of several promising young players this season.

Simphiwe Masilela, Mpho Padime, Mohau Nkota and new signing Bheki Mabuza are among the players adding further competition for places.

With Pirates investing heavily in young talent, regular first-team opportunities were always going to be difficult to secure for players already struggling to break into Ouaddou’s preferred line-up.

The loan switch to Gallants could therefore prove crucial for Msendami and Mariko, allowing them to play more consistently and demonstrate their qualities away from the intense competition at Pirates.

For the Buccaneers, the decision also provides the two midfielders with a pathway to gain valuable playing time rather than remaining on the fringes of the first team.

Both players will now hope their spell at Marumo Gallants can provide the platform needed to return to Orlando Pirates stronger and ready to compete for places in the squad.
