South Africa: Orlando Pirates return to top of Betway Premiership with win over Richards Bay

Orlando Pirates climbed back to the summit of the Betway Premiership standings after securing a 2-0 victory against Richards Bay FC on Wednesday night.

The result proved decisive in the race for the title, with the Buccaneers moving level on points with Mamelodi Sundowns but reclaiming first place on goal difference.

Both teams now sit on 47 points with 10 matches remaining in the season.

Orlando Pirates took control of the match midway through the first half when winger Oswin Appollis opened the scoring in the 26th minute.

The goal came after a precise cutback cross from Kamogelo Sebelebele, allowing Appollis to finish from close range and give the hosts the advantage.

Despite taking the lead, Pirates were unable to immediately extend their advantage.

Richards Bay, often referred to as the Natal RichBoyz, remained organised at the back and managed to keep the scoreline within reach through the remainder of the first half and much of the second period.

As the match progressed, the pressure increased on the Pirates defence.

The side coached by Abdeslam Ouaddou faced a series of late attacking moves from the visitors, who looked determined to find an equaliser in the closing stages.

However, Pirates held firm defensively and ultimately sealed the win deep into stoppage time.

Substitute Evidence Makgopa converted from the penalty spot after fellow substitute Tshepang Moremi was fouled inside the area.

The late goal confirmed a 2-0 victory and ensured Orlando Pirates finished the night back at the top of the league table.

With the title race tightening and only ten matches left to play, the result could prove significant in the battle for the championship.
