Orlando Pirates move within one point of Mamelodi Sundowns with fifth straight win

Orlando Pirates strengthened their challenge at the top of the Betway Premiership with a 2-0 victory over Marumo Gallants at Royal Bafokeng Stadium on Sunday.

The result leaves Pirates one point behind leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, who have collected 20 points from eight matches. The Buccaneers have 19 points from seven games and therefore hold a match in hand.

Kabelo Kgosietsile opened the scoring before Nkosinathi Sibisi added a second 15 minutes from time, extending Pirates’ winning run in the league to five matches.

Pirates have also maintained a strong defensive record this season, conceding only one penalty. That came against AmaZulu in a 1-1 draw last month.

The defeat was Gallants’ fifth in the league campaign. They have also drawn two matches and remain at the foot of the table with two points from seven games.

Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou made one change to the side that defeated Durban City on Thursday, with Simphiwe Selepe replacing Mthetheli Mthiyane, who dropped to the bench.

Gallants were seeking their first win of the season under new coach Ronni Kanalelo, who took over from Phuti Mohafe, but were unable to halt their difficult start.

Pirates began with purpose, with Tshepang Moremi causing problems for the Gallants defence. Their pressure eventually produced the opening goal after 30 minutes.

Kgosietsile timed his run behind the defence before meeting the ball with a volley that flew into the near corner.

Gallants had an immediate opportunity to respond when Pirates gave the ball away and Mxolisi Kunene broke through centrally. He had only Sipho Chaine to beat, but his effort went wide and the chance was missed.

Gallants made a stronger start to the second half and attempted to put Pirates under pressure, but the visitors’ defence remained well organised. Their hosts struggled to create clear opportunities in front of goal.

Pirates continued to control much of the match and retained their energy despite having played Durban City on Tuesday.

Their second goal arrived with 15 minutes remaining, when Sibisi converted from a corner to secure another important victory and bring the Buccaneers to within one point of Sundowns.
