Orlando Pirates’ goalless draw away to Sekhukhune United on Saturday may have denied them a return to the top of the Betway Premiership table, but it also underlined the resilience that has come to define their season.
The Buccaneers extended their domestic unbeaten run to 18 matches, a sequence that continues to keep them firmly in the title conversation despite settling for a point against stubborn opposition.
Pirates remain level on 29 points with Mamelodi Sundowns and still hold a game in hand. However, a marginally inferior goal difference, +13 compared to Sundowns’ +15, means they stay second for now.
While the stalemate offered little in terms of attacking reward, it was far from a damaging result against a side that has proven awkward, particularly on home soil.
A run built on recovery and consistency
This current streak has its roots in adversity. After losing their opening two league fixtures, including a 1-0 home defeat to Sekhukhune, Pirates appeared vulnerable early in the campaign.
A shock 2-1 loss to Marumo Gallants deepened those concerns, but the response since has been emphatic.
The unbeaten run began with a 1-1 draw against Sundowns in the MTN8 semifinals on August 16 and has since grown into a sustained period of dominance across competitions.
Pirates have won 14 matches in the league, MTN8 and Carling Knockout during this stretch, lifting silverware in both knockout tournaments along the way.
Notably, the only sides to avoid defeat against Pirates in this period are Sundowns and Sekhukhune. Even so, Pirates edged Sundowns on penalties in the MTN8 semifinals after successive draws, reinforcing their big-game temperament.
Defensive strength driving belief
Underlying the run is an outstanding defensive record. Pirates have conceded just five goals in 18 domestic matches, three of them against Sundowns, while keeping 13 clean sheets. They have scored 27 times in the same period, striking a balance between control and efficiency.
Across all competitions, including the CAF Champions League, Pirates have suffered just one defeat in 22 matches.
Attention now turns to Saturday’s home clash with Magesi FC, where they will look to maintain momentum and keep the pressure firmly on their title rivals.
