Orlando Pirates eye Sekhukhune United goalkeeper Renaldo Leaner
Orlando Pirates are reportedly considering a move for Sekhukhune United goalkeeper Renaldo Leaner ahead of next season as the Buccaneers look to strengthen their squad.
The talented shot-stopper has emerged as one of the promising young goalkeepers in South African football following a series of impressive performances for Sekhukhune United.
Leaner’s displays did not go unnoticed, with Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos rewarding him with a call-up to the national team earlier this year.
However, the youngster endured a difficult international debut after South Africa suffered a 2-0 defeat to Panama in March, with Leaner criticised for conceding soft goals during the encounter.
His struggles at international level were followed by a setback at club level, where he lost his place in Sekhukhune United’s starting lineup to goalkeeper Toaster Ntsabatha.
Despite the recent challenges, Orlando Pirates reportedly remain interested in securing his services.
The Sea Robbers are believed to view Leaner as a long-term option capable of strengthening their goalkeeping department alongside first-choice goalkeeper Sipho Chaine.
Pirates currently also have Melusi Buthelezi among their goalkeeping options, but reports suggest the club sees Leaner as a possible direct replacement for Buthelezi, who has struggled to establish himself at the Soweto giants.
Leaner is still regarded as one of the country’s bright goalkeeping prospects due to his reflexes, composure and potential for development at the highest level.
A move to Orlando Pirates could offer the young goalkeeper an opportunity to revive his momentum and compete for silverware at one of South Africa’s biggest clubs.
