Vladimir Vermezovic Resigns as Orlando Pirates Head Coach Ahead of Soweto Derby
By BBC Sport – Football
Orlando Pirates have been left without a head coach just days before the highly anticipated Soweto derby, following the resignation of Vladimir Vermezovic. The Serbian tactician stepped down on Wednesday, a day after the club’s disappointing league defeat to Maritzburg United.
The news was confirmed in an official statement released via the club’s social media platforms. “Vladimir Vermezovic submitted his resignation today to the club, which has accepted it,” read the announcement from Orlando Pirates Football Club.
Club chairman Dr. Irvin Khoza acknowledged the resignation and emphasized the need for continuity and calm during this transitional period. “We have accepted Vladimir Vermezovic’s resignation. Team stability is a priority,” Khoza said.
In the wake of Vermezovic’s departure, assistant coach Eric Tinkler has been appointed interim manager. Tinkler, a former Bafana Bafana midfielder, now faces the daunting task of preparing the team for Saturday’s showdown with bitter rivals Kaizer Chiefs — one of South Africa’s most fiercely contested football fixtures.
Vermezovic’s time at the helm was a mix of highs and inconsistencies. He guided the Buccaneers to two domestic cup titles — the Nedbank Cup and the Carling Black Label Cup — but struggled to maintain momentum in the league. After 12 matches, Orlando Pirates sit sixth in the Premier Soccer League standings, having suffered four defeats. They trail league leaders Kaizer Chiefs by 12 points, with the Amakhosi still unbeaten this season.
His resignation, coming so close to a critical match, raises questions about timing and internal pressures within the club. Yet with the season still open, the focus now shifts to how Tinkler and the players respond under pressure.
For the Pirates faithful, hopes remain that the team can regroup quickly and salvage their campaign — starting with a statement performance in the derby.
