Abdeslam Ouaddou opens up on win over Chippa United

Orlando Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has defended his demanding approach to coaching after guiding the Buccaneers to a convincing 3-0 victory over Chippa United in Durban.

Ouaddou appeared visibly frustrated when discussing criticism surrounding his treatment of the Pirates players, insisting that being tough on his squad is sometimes necessary to get the desired response on the pitch.

The Moroccan coach suggested that his relationship with the players goes beyond that of a traditional manager, comparing himself to a father or an older brother who understands the personalities and psychology of those under his charge.

“I think my boys gave me a great response,” Ouaddou said after the match.

The Pirates boss then addressed the criticism he has received over his methods, making it clear that he does not believe his demanding nature is unusual in a dressing room.

“You know, when a father or big brother is shouting in the dressing room, who else knows better than me my players, the psychology of my players.”

Ouaddou appeared particularly unimpressed by suggestions that a coach should avoid being overly confrontational with his players, arguing that there are moments when stronger words and tougher treatment are required.

“So, people talk too much to say the coach he cannot talk like that in the media. I’m expecting an answer, and sometimes you need to be a little bit hard with your boys to have this kind of performance.”

The emphatic victory over Chippa United provided the response Ouaddou wanted from his squad, with Pirates producing a commanding display to claim all three points.

For the coach, the performance appears to have vindicated his methods and reinforced his belief that demanding more from his players can bring out the best in them.

Ouaddou’s comments also underline the intensity of his expectations at Pirates. With the club competing for major honours, the coach appears determined to establish a culture of accountability and discipline within the squad.

The 3-0 result will therefore be particularly satisfying for Ouaddou, who can point to the performance as evidence that his players have responded positively to his demands.
