Orlando Pirates begin MTN8 title defence against Durban City

Reigning champions Orlando Pirates begin their bid for a record-extending fifth successive MTN8 title when they face Durban City in the first round at the Orlando Amstel Arena on Saturday afternoon.

Pirates lifted the trophy for a fourth consecutive time last season after beating Stellenbosch FC 3-0 in the final. They will now start their latest campaign with a home fixture against a Durban City side appearing in the competition for the first time.

The match is scheduled for 8 August 2026 and forms part of the opening round of the MTN8.

Pirates have already made a winning start to their 2026/27 season. Abdeslam Ouaddou’s side defeated newly promoted Milford FC 2-0 last weekend in front of a sold-out crowd.

That result gives the holders early momentum as they look to extend their dominance of the eight-team competition. Their immediate challenge is to overcome a City team beginning a new era under Khalil Ben Youssef.

Durban City’s first match under their new manager ended in defeat, with Sekhukhune United securing a 1-0 victory last weekend. The result means City will be seeking a response in what is their first appearance in the MTN8.

The Durban outfit earned their place in the tournament after finishing eighth in their debut Betway Premiership campaign. Their meeting with Pirates will therefore be both their opening fixture in this season’s competition and their first experience of the MTN8.

Durban City’s line-up was yet to be confirmed at the time of publication.

The match pits the defending champions against a side making its debut in the competition, with Pirates aiming to continue their outstanding MTN8 run and City attempting to mark their first appearance with a major upset.

Pirates’ recent 2-0 victory over Milford FC was their first competitive result of the new campaign, while City arrive after their narrow loss to Sekhukhune United. The contrasting starts add significance to Saturday’s contest, although the holders will begin as the more experienced side in the tournament.
