Oran poised to join Algeria’s glorious list of World Cup qualification cities

After Constantine, Algiers, Omdurman, and Blida, the city of Oran is preparing to write its own chapter in Algeria’s World Cup history.

The coastal city is set to become the latest stage where the Greens seal their qualification for football’s most prestigious tournament.

This achievement, should it be confirmed, will mark Algeria’s fifth appearance at the FIFA World Cup — a journey that began more than four decades ago.

Each qualification has carried its own story, emotion, and setting, from the euphoria of the early 1980s to the unforgettable nights that followed.

It all started on 30 October 1981 in Constantine, when the national team faced Nigeria at the June 17 Stadium, now known as the Chahid-Hamlaoui Stadium.

Having secured a 2-0 victory in the first leg in Ibadan, Algeria confirmed their qualification with a 2-1 win at home, earning a historic first ticket to the World Cup.

The moment ignited a new era for Algerian football and inspired a generation.

Four years later, on 18 October 1985, Algiers became the next city to host the celebrations.

At the iconic July 5 Stadium, Djamel Menad and his teammates crushed Tunisia 3-0, completing a dominant qualifying campaign that had already seen them triumph 4-1 in El-Menzah, Tunis.

The victory confirmed Algeria’s second consecutive World Cup appearance — a feat that firmly established the Fennecs among Africa’s footballing elite.

But perhaps no qualification remains as deeply etched in national memory as Omdurman, Sudan, in November 2009.

In a dramatic play-off against Egypt, Rabah Saâdane’s side triumphed 1-0 thanks to a thunderous strike from Antar Yahia, ending a 24-year absence from the global stage.

That night, Algeria’s victory sparked scenes of jubilation across the country and remains one of the defining moments in its sporting history.

The Greens repeated the feat four years later, on 19 November 2013, in Blida, when they overcame Burkina Faso to qualify for Brazil 2014.

After losing 3-2 in the first leg, Algeria’s determination shone through in the return match.

Madjid Bougherra’s decisive header amid a scramble in the penalty area sealed qualification, sending the Mustapha Tchaker Stadium into ecstasy.

Now, Oran stands ready to join that distinguished list of host cities.

The Miloud Hadefi Stadium, vibrant with expectation, awaits a moment that could once again unite the nation in celebration.

If history is any guide, tonight could see Oran become forever linked with Algeria’s proud World Cup legacy — a new home for memories that will live on for generations.
