Opta gives Barcelona the edge for El Clasico, but history warns against early conclusions

Barcelona have been given a clear statistical advantage over Real Madrid ahead of Sunday’s El Clasico, although recent meetings between the two sides suggest the numbers may not tell the full story.

The Catalan club host their capital rivals at Spotify Camp Nou tomorrow in the headline fixture of the 10th round of La Liga. According to Opta’s win-probability index, Barcelona have a 54.4% chance of victory, compared with 26.1% for Real Madrid. The remaining probability is assigned to a draw.

Opta published the figures on 23 October 2026, with its assessment reflecting Barcelona’s stronger start to the campaign. Hansi Flick’s side have won all nine of their opening league matches and sit top of the table with 27 points.

Real Madrid are third on 21 points, while Barcelona also hold the division’s best attacking record. They have scored 39 goals so far, 16 more than Real Madrid, who have the second-highest total in the competition.

Defensively, however, there is little to separate the teams. Both clubs have conceded nine goals during the opening nine rounds of La Liga.

Those figures help explain why Opta has placed Barcelona so far ahead in its pre-match forecast. Yet the record of recent league Clasicos provides Real Madrid with grounds for optimism, despite their lower rating.

In the 11 meetings between the sides in La Liga since 2021, the team with the lower pre-match win probability has gone on to win four times. The victories have been split evenly, with two for Barcelona and two for Real Madrid.

That pattern means Barcelona’s statistical superiority cannot be treated as a guarantee of victory at Spotify Camp Nou. Equally, Real Madrid’s 26.1% probability does not rule out a result that would overturn the prediction.

The contrast between the current league table and the recent head-to-head record highlights the uncertainty surrounding one of football’s most closely watched fixtures. Barcelona arrive with the stronger points tally and the more productive attack, but the previous 11 league encounters show that the less-fancied side has repeatedly been capable of upsetting the forecast.
