Omar Marmoush joins Tottenham on season-long loan from Manchester City

Manchester City forward Omar Marmoush has joined Tottenham on a season-long loan, with the London club confirming the deal includes an obligation to make the transfer permanent next summer.

Manchester City announced the move on Thursday but did not mention the clause reported by most outlets, which would turn the loan into a permanent transfer if certain conditions are met. Tottenham, however, confirmed that the agreement includes a mandatory purchase clause.

The permanent transfer is expected to be worth about £60m, according to several reports. If the deal is completed, Egypt international Marmoush will sign a four-year contract with Tottenham, with the option of extending it by a further season.

Marmoush becomes only the third Egyptian player to represent Tottenham, following Ahmed Hossam “Mido” and Hossam Ghaly.

The 26-year-old said goodbye to his Manchester City team-mates on Wednesday morning before travelling to join his new club. Tottenham moved quickly to complete the transfer in the hope that Marmoush would be available for Saturday’s match against Newcastle United.

Newcastle United are considered Marmoush’s favourite opponents, with the forward having scored seven goals against them.

Tottenham rebuild

Tottenham see Marmoush as an important part of their attacking rebuild under manager Roberto De Zerbi. The club began their Premier League campaign with a 3-0 defeat by Brentford on Saturday in the opening round of the competition.

Marmoush joined Manchester City from Frankfurt in January 2025. During his time at the club, he made 62 appearances, scoring 16 goals and providing six assists.

He won the FA Cup and the EFL Cup with Manchester City.

The move brings an end, at least temporarily, to Marmoush’s spell at the Etihad Stadium and gives Tottenham an attacking player who has already established himself at international level. The structure of the agreement means his initial arrival is temporary, but Tottenham’s announcement makes clear that the club’s intention is for him to remain beyond the current season.

For Manchester City, the deal allows Marmoush to leave on loan while retaining the possibility of a substantial permanent fee if the conditions of the agreement are met. For Tottenham, the transfer is the first major step in the attacking reconstruction planned under De Zerbi.

Marmoush’s immediate focus will be on settling into the Tottenham squad and being ready for the visit to Newcastle United. The club were beaten heavily by Brentford in their opening league fixture and will be looking for a response in their next match.

His record against Newcastle provides an additional reason for Tottenham to have pursued an early agreement. Seven goals against the same opponent makes Saturday’s fixture a potentially significant first opportunity for Marmoush to make an impact in Tottenham colours, should he be selected.
