Omar Fayed voices disappointment after Egypt exclusion ahead of key World Cup build-up

Arouca defender Omar Fayed has sparked a national debate after publicly voicing his frustration over being excluded from the Egypt national team squad for the upcoming March international break.

In a candid Instagram post on March 22, 2026, the 22-year-old center-back described his omission as “disappointing” and “saddening,” especially given his consistent efforts while on loan at Portuguese side FC Arouca.

Fayed, who has made nine appearances in Portugal this season, expressed respect for head coach Hossam Hassan’s decisions but called for more “follow-up and attention” toward players performing abroad.

“I fully support and encourage my country’s national team, but honestly, not being included in the squad despite my continuous effort and professionalism in the Portuguese league is something that saddens me,” Fayed wrote.

“I respect all decisions, but I hoped there would be more monitoring and attention,” he said, adding, “I will continue working, and I trust that my efforts will not go to waste.”

His comments come at a critical time as the Pharaohs ramp up preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where they have been drawn into Group G alongside Belgium, Iran, and New Zealand.

The squad announcement for the high-profile friendlies against Saudi Arabia (March 27 in Jeddah) and Spain (March 31 in Barcelona) was further complicated by the absence of captain Mohamed Salah.

The Liverpool star remains sidelined with an injury, a significant blow for a team looking to test itself against elite opposition.

To fill the void, Coach Hassan introduced several tactical surprises, most notably the first-ever call-up for Real Oviedo winger Haissem Hassan, who recently switched his international allegiance from France.

The 26-man roster also features the return of Mohamed Abdelmonem from injury, alongside inclusions for Zamalek forward Nasser Mansi and goalkeeper Mahdi Soliman.
