Egypt’s Omar Fayed converts penalty on debut but Frosinone suffer Coppa Italia exit against Sassuolo

Omar Fayed made his Frosinone debut and successfully converted his penalty, but his new side were eliminated from the Coppa Italia after losing 4-3 to Sassuolo in a shootout.

Frosinone were held to a 1-1 draw by Sassuolo after 90 minutes before losing the last-32 tie on penalties, with Fayed’s successful spot-kick unable to prevent his side from bowing out of the competition.

The Egypt defender started the match on the bench before being introduced in the 62nd minute, replacing Kevin Akpoguma for his first appearance since joining Frosinone from Turkish giants Fenerbahce during the summer transfer window.

Fayed makes instant impact

Fayed was quickly involved in a key moment after coming on, although it was one he would have preferred to avoid.

Frosinone appeared to have completed a comeback in the 75th minute when Matteo Cichella found the net, but the goal was ruled out following a VAR review.

The decision was linked to a foul by Fayed in the middle of the pitch during the build-up, denying Frosinone what would have been a potential winning goal.

The hosts had fallen behind nine minutes before half-time when Benja Dominguez put Sassuolo ahead in the 36th minute.

Frosinone responded almost immediately, with Aleksa Terzic restoring parity in the final minute of the first half.

Neither team could find a decisive goal after the break, sending the contest to penalties and setting up an opportunity for Fayed to make another contribution on his debut.

Fayed converts but Sassuolo prevail

The defender stepped up as Frosinone’s second taker and confidently converted his spot-kick, giving his team a boost during the shootout.

However, Frosinone could not maintain that advantage as Louis Hasa and Wisdom Amey missed their attempts.

Sassuolo ultimately prevailed 4-3 on penalties to secure their place in the next round and bring Frosinone’s Coppa Italia campaign to an end.

For Fayed, the defeat overshadowed an encouraging individual debut. The 25-year-old played the final 28 minutes of normal time, successfully converted his penalty and gained his first competitive minutes for his new club.

His introduction also marked the beginning of a new chapter in Italy following his move from Fenerbahce, with the defender now looking to establish himself at Frosinone.

Frosinone will return their attention to Serie A, with Venezia their next opponents on Sunday, September 6.
