Omar Fayed called up by Egypt to replace injured Hamdy Fathy

Egypt have called up Frosinone defender Omar Fayed to replace Hamdy Fathy in their squad, national team director Ibrahim Hassan has confirmed.

Fathy, who plays for Qatari club Al Wakrah, has been ruled out of Egypt’s squad during the current international break after suffering an injury in his side’s Qatar Cup match against Al Sailiya on Saturday evening.

Hassan said: “It was decided to call up Omar Fayed, who plays for Italian club Frosinone, to join Egypt’s training camp after Hamdy Fathy was injured with his Qatari club Al Wakrah.”

The 23-year-old Fayed is joining the senior Egypt squad for the second time. He has previously represented the country at youth and Olympic level but has yet to make his first-team debut.

Fayed was first called into the senior squad in June 2023, when he was playing for Egyptian side El Mokawloon El Arab, under then-manager Rui Vitoria. He was selected as a replacement for Ahmed Hegazi but did not feature in a match.

The centre-back currently plays for Frosinone after moving to the Italian club from Turkish side Fenerbahce. He has also spent time on loan with Serbian club Novi Pazar, Belgian side Beerschot and Portuguese club Arouca.

His opportunities at Frosinone have so far been limited. He has played only a few minutes for the club in the Coppa Italia, although he scored his penalty in their shootout defeat by Sassuolo.

Fayed was part of the Egypt team that finished fourth at the Paris 2026 Olympics.

Egypt are scheduled to begin their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign with matches against Angola and South Sudan on 25 and 29 September respectively.

They will then play a friendly against South Africa on 4 October.

Fayed’s addition follows the announcement of Fathy’s injury and gives Egypt another defensive option ahead of their first two qualifying fixtures.
