Ivorian Omar Diakité fires Cercle Brugge to crucial win over Dender
Ivorian forward Omar Diakité scored twice to hand Cercle Brugge a 2-1 victory over FCV Dender EH in the Belgian Jupiler Pro League relegation playoffs on Friday night.
The decisive contribution came from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations winner, who delivered both goals in a performance that proved central to his side’s success in round four of the playoff phase.
His efforts ensured Cercle Brugge claimed all three points despite late pressure from the visitors.
Diakité opened the scoring in the 29th minute, giving the home side an early advantage after a controlled start to the match.
His goal set the tone for Cercle Brugge, who looked composed and purposeful in possession as they sought to build on their lead.
The forward, currently on loan from French side Reims, extended the advantage in the 69th minute.
His second goal of the evening doubled Cercle Brugge’s cushion and appeared to put the result beyond doubt as the match entered its closing stages.
However, FCV Dender mounted a late response, pulling a goal back to reduce the deficit to 2-1.
The visitors’ late strike introduced a tense finish, but Cercle Brugge held firm to preserve their lead until the final whistle.
Diakité’s clinical display ultimately made the difference, underlining his importance to the team during a critical stage of the season.
His two goals not only secured the win but also highlighted his growing influence in the Belgian top flight.
The result provides Cercle Brugge with a valuable boost in the relegation playoffs, where every point carries significant weight.
