Marseille Midfield Dilemma: Romao or Lemina? Bielsa Faces a Tough Call
As Olympique de Marseille prepares for its upcoming fixtures, a key question looms: will Alaixys Romao reclaim his starting spot in Marcelo Bielsa’s midfield, or has Mario Lemina done enough to cement his place in the eleven?
Romao, recently returning from suspension, had been a consistent and physical presence in OM’s midfield. But in his absence, 21-year-old Lemina has seized the opportunity to shine — and his recent performances are giving Bielsa a genuine selection headache.
Lemina, who joined Marseille from Lorient, was sidelined early in the season with an injury picked up in a friendly against Bari. However, forced into action due to injuries and suspensions in the squad, the French youth international has responded with authority. His energetic display against Bordeaux last weekend was a standout, combining pace, intelligent positioning, and impressive stamina — all qualities that align well with Bielsa’s high-tempo, high-pressing style.
Meanwhile, several regular starters — including André Ayew, Nicolas N’Koulou, and Jérémy Morel — have been out due to injury or suspension. Although Morel and N’Koulou are expected to return shortly, Ayew remains doubtful for the clash against Nantes. Their absences have opened the door for fringe players to prove their worth, and Lemina is among those making the most of it.
The decision now rests with Bielsa. Romao offers experience, toughness, and a strong defensive presence — attributes not easily dismissed. But Lemina’s dynamism, superior pace, and ability to cover ground quickly may provide the Argentine coach with the edge he needs in a fast-paced Ligue 1 season.
As OM chases consistency at the top of the table, Bielsa must weigh the reliability and physicality of Romao against the youthful energy and upward trajectory of Lemina. With competition fierce, Marseille’s midfield could well become a defining battleground in the weeks to come.
