Pierre Ménès Denies Praise for Romao Amid Online Feud and Old Tweet Controversy
French football pundit Pierre Ménès has found himself at the centre of another social media storm, this time involving Olympique de Marseille midfielder Alaixys Romao. The controversy reignited on Monday when an old tweet resurfaced in which Ménès appeared to offer high praise for the Togolese international — a stark contrast to his recent criticism.
The situation stems from an incident during Marseille’s 4-2 win over Lyon, in which Romao was accused by Lyon striker Bafétimbi Gomis of directing vulgar insults at him — including a personal dig aimed at Ménès: “Go suck… the big Ménès.” The Canal+ consultant responded on Twitter, calling Romao a “stupid and nasty” player.
However, the feud took a twist when social media users unearthed a past tweet allegedly written by Ménès that portrayed Romao in a very positive light. The tweet, widely shared online, seemingly contradicts the commentator’s current stance on the player.
Ménès, known for his outspoken commentary, was quick to dismiss the resurfaced tweet as a fabrication. “Always afraid of becoming senile, I checked. I never wrote that tweet about Romao. I was also thinking…” he posted, alongside a screenshot, in an effort to deny any inconsistency.
The journalist’s sharp exchanges with players have become something of a hallmark, with this latest dispute following a previous public clash with Patrice Evra. As with past incidents, Ménès’ comments have divided opinion among fans, some of whom question the tone and role of media personalities in escalating tensions within French football.
While the authenticity of the original tweet remains in question, the episode underscores the volatile mix of football, media, and social media — where a single message, real or fake, can rapidly fuel public debate.
