Batshuayi Eyes Starting Role at Marseille Amid Striker Speculation
With André-Pierre Gignac set to depart Olympique de Marseille at the end of his contract, Belgian forward Michy Batshuayi is eyeing a step up into the number one striker role next season. The 21-year-old, who made 26 Ligue 1 appearances and scored nine goals this campaign, is eager to seize the opportunity—but remains aware of potential competition.
Speaking to Téléfoot, Batshuayi said: “I know next season is going to be important, it’s going to be a challenge. But that’s why I chose OM, and I’m going to do everything I can to come back stronger. I’m eager to get back into the number one role. I can’t wait to start again, but you have to rest mentally to be ready when the time comes.”
The former Standard Liège striker served primarily as backup to Gignac this season, but his impressive goal return has bolstered his case for a more prominent role in the upcoming campaign.
However, Marseille are reportedly considering reinforcements up front, with Ligue 1 standouts Claudio Beauvue (Guingamp) and Wissam Ben Yedder (Toulouse) frequently linked with a move to the Vélodrome. Both players have proven themselves at the top level and could provide stiff competition for Batshuayi if signed.
As the summer transfer window approaches, Marseille’s striker situation remains one to watch, with Batshuayi determined to stake his claim as the club’s new leading man.
