Mandanda Hits Back at Weight Criticism: “You’re Boring Me with This”
BBC Sport – Marseille
Olympique de Marseille goalkeeper Steve Mandanda has spoken out firmly in response to recent criticism over his fitness and professionalism, denying suggestions that he was reprimanded by head coach Marcelo Bielsa over his weight during the summer.
The 29-year-old, who has featured in all of Marseille’s Ligue 1 matches this season, addressed the claims at a press conference this week. French outlet L’Équipe had reported that Bielsa held a private meeting with Mandanda during pre-season due to concerns over his training commitment and physical condition.
But the France international was quick to clarify the situation.
“You’re boring me with your weight,” Mandanda said bluntly when questioned. “I’ve lost weight, yes, but what next? It’s nothing extraordinary.”
He acknowledged that part of the article may have been grounded in truth but took issue with how it was presented — particularly the suggestion that goalkeeping coach Stéphane Cassard had raised concerns about him behind closed doors.
“When people say I don’t want to work, that Cassard went to the coach and that the coach then called me in, that’s not true,” he said.
“I worked hard to recover from my injury, which explains the weight loss. I get along very well with Cassard — he supported me. Since he had no complaints, the coach didn’t say anything.”
Mandanda missed out on the latter part of the previous season due to injury, which also ruled him out of France’s 2014 World Cup campaign. But since returning under the guidance of Bielsa, the Marseille captain appears to have regained both form and fitness.
His resurgence has coincided with a strong start to the season for OM, who have looked revitalised under the Argentine coach’s high-tempo philosophy. Mandanda’s performances between the posts have drawn praise, and he remains an integral figure in both the dressing room and on the pitch.
In a team transformed under Bielsa, Mandanda’s reaction suggests a player determined not just to silence critics — but to lead by example.
