Transfer Watch: André Ayew Attracts European Interest as Marseille Future Hangs in Balance
By BBC Sport | Football – France
With his contract set to expire in June, Olympique de Marseille’s André Ayew is drawing serious attention from several top European clubs — notably in England and Italy — as speculation intensifies over his future.
The Ghanaian international has yet to agree to a contract extension with OM, and recent developments suggest a departure may be imminent. According to L’Équipe, Ayew has changed agents and is now represented by Italian intermediaries, including Federico Pastorello — a move widely interpreted as a signal of growing interest from Serie A giants such as Napoli and Juventus.
When asked about his son’s future by Italian outlet TMW, Ayew’s father, former Ghana legend and Marseille icon Abedi Pelé, remained diplomatic but hinted at multiple options.
“Yes, it’s true, his contract is coming to an end, but right now he’s focused on playing and winning with OM,” said Abedi Pelé. “We’re waiting for a sign from the president. There are possibilities in both England and Italy, but we’re still waiting. A preference for Italy? No, no preference. Of course, there are big teams there — Inter, Milan, Napoli, Juventus — but nothing concrete yet.”
Despite the uncertainty, Ayew has remained a key figure in Marcelo Bielsa’s squad, admired for his work rate and versatility. Bielsa, the enigmatic Argentine coach, has been credited with revitalizing Marseille this season, and Abedi Pelé was full of praise for his impact.
“He brought his mentality, determination, fighting spirit, aggression,” he said. “He has brought many, many positive things. OM is a great team, and with no Champions League distractions, there’s a real advantage. What’s remarkable is that he has the same players as last year but has managed to instill a whole new mentality — the games are beautiful to watch.”
Nonetheless, reports suggest Ayew has already turned down a contract renewal offer from Marseille, making a summer exit highly likely. With the player entering the final months of his deal, clubs are expected to step up their pursuit, sensing an opportunity to land a proven international on a free transfer.
Whether he stays in Ligue 1 until the summer or secures a January move remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: André Ayew’s next step will be closely followed across the European football landscape.
