Jordan Ayew Closes the Door on Marseille: “The Past is the Past”
Now firmly settled at FC Lorient, Jordan Ayew has made it crystal clear: Olympique de Marseille is no longer part of his footballing present—or future.
In an interview with France Football published Tuesday, the Ghanaian forward expressed zero nostalgia for his time at OM.
“Marseille is Marseille, and the past is the past. I’m at Lorient, I don’t see why we have to talk about OM again,” he stated bluntly.
Ayew, who left Marseille after a loan spell at Sochaux, revealed he never intended to return to the club, despite interest from then-president Vincent Labrune to keep him on.
“The president wanted to keep me, but I didn’t want to stay. Whether I had succeeded or not at Sochaux, I already knew back in January I wouldn’t go back to OM.”
A Matter of Principle
Ayew cited broken promises and miscommunication as the main reasons behind his departure:
“It’s not that I’m impatient, but I don’t like being taken for an idiot. That’s all.”
As for whether he might have had a shot under Marcelo Bielsa, Ayew is clear:
“Would I have had my chance at OM with Bielsa? Maybe. But it was me who didn’t want to stay. I don’t regret anything.”
Focused on Lorient’s Survival
Though Lorient is struggling—bottom of the table after 13 games—Ayew is getting the playing time he sought: 11 appearances (10 starts), 2 goals, and 2 assists so far. His goal now is to help Lorient avoid relegation, just as he tried to do with Sochaux last season.
No regrets, no looking back—Jordan Ayew has firmly turned the page on Marseille.
