Olympique de Marseille revives interest in Congolese striker Simon Banza for summer transfer window

Olympique de Marseille have reignited their pursuit of Congolese forward Simon Banza, with plans to target the Trabzonspor striker in the upcoming summer transfer window.

Marseille had previously shown strong interest in Banza during the 2024 summer window but backed away due to Sporting Braga’s steep €25 million asking price.

The Ligue 1 side deemed the valuation too high and opted to explore alternative options at the time.

However, Banza’s impressive performances since moving to Trabzonspor in the Turkish Süper Lig have once again put him on Marseille’s radar.

The 27-year-old has been in scintillating form, consistently finding the back of the net and cementing his reputation as one of the league’s top forwards.

His growing influence in Turkey has, however, complicated matters for Marseille, with the striker’s market value likely higher than before.

Marseille’s renewed interest reflects their ongoing search for a prolific frontman who can provide the consistency they’ve lacked in attack this season.

Currently sitting second in Ligue 1, the club is eyeing reinforcements to solidify their Champions League aspirations and close the gap on rivals.

Banza’s goal-scoring instinct and physical presence in the box make him an ideal fit for Marseille’s system, which thrives on quick transitions and strong aerial threats.

The decision to revisit Banza’s profile comes as the Marseille board reflects on past transfer decisions.

There is a growing sense of regret within the club for not finalizing the deal earlier when Banza was still at Braga.

Since his move to Turkey, the Congolese striker has only enhanced his reputation, drawing attention not only from French clubs but also from other European teams seeking an in-form striker.

Despite the increased competition and potential for a higher price tag, Marseille are reportedly prepared to make a serious approach this summer.

Club officials believe Banza’s qualities align perfectly with the team’s tactical approach, especially under head coach Roberto De Zerbi, who values dynamic and versatile forwards capable of adapting to different attacking roles.

The challenge for Marseille, however, lies in the financial demands that Trabzonspor are expected to impose. Given Banza’s current form and importance to the Turkish side, any potential transfer is likely to come at a premium.

Marseille will need to carefully assess their budget and possibly offload players to fund the move.

For Banza, a return to Ligue 1 could be an enticing prospect, especially with the opportunity to compete in European competitions and showcase his talents on a bigger stage.

The Congolese international has previously expressed his ambition to play at the highest level, and a move to a club like Marseille could align perfectly with his career goals.

As the summer transfer window approaches, Marseille’s pursuit of Simon Banza is expected to intensify.

Whether the club can navigate the financial hurdles and secure the striker’s signature remains to be seen, but one thing is certain—Marseille view Banza as a key piece in their long-term attacking strategy.
